Book Town

A few months ago, on a busy Saturday at the port, a man walked in with a book.
I was told this book was his first attempt at a novel and he wanted us to sell it.
He asked if I knew who he was.
I did not.
He told me he was well known for writing doctrine type books for certain religious people.
I told him if it was some sort of doctrine intertwined into a novel then he could count me out.
He chuckled at that one.
Um...not joking guy.
He promised me it was not like that, and I am always up for trying something new.
This type of book never appeals to me but I was pleasantly surprised.
I mean, an independent spunky woman that is a pilot. And! She is stunt horseback rider for movies?
I will go ahead an be her now.
Well done Mr. Doctrine.
I approve of this in the pilot shop.
Amy....you are about to fall in love with this book. It is right up your Twilight loving alley.
You should ask for a percentage of the sales.

Book Town

Just finished this one.
Read it.
Your life will most likely be changed.
Gay H. is becoming the fastest author to win my heart in this genre.

"The highest goal of spirituality is Self-realization, but what does that mean? It means to feel your Self as a living reality in this moment, and there is always only this moment."
-Gay Hendricks

Books

There has been a few people that have been telling me to read this graphic novel.
I am slow to finish such books, because of all of the reading I do for school.
I finally finished Watchmen.
Finally.
There are some proud people out there.
The book did not disappoint.
I am still partial to Blankets though.
Such a girl.

Laurie Juspeczyk: Is that what you are? The most powerful thing in the universe and you're just a puppet following a script?
Doctor Manhattan: We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings.

Book Club

I recently read The Game by Neil Strauss.
The book is about an underground seduction community of pick-up artists.
No, really. This exists.
The book might make you lose faith in humanity and love.
Or.
That love can exist in this crazy world.
Or.
It may give you some new tricks to become a pickup artist or defenses against them.
I think I experienced all of these things when reading this book.
I highly recommend this one. I never knew half of the information in the book even existed.
It is real life.
I have a whole new perspective on dating now.

"We have this idea that love is supposed to last forever. But love isn't like that. It's a free-flowing energy that comes and goes when it pleases. Sometimes it stays for life; other times it stays for a second, a day, a month, or a year. So don't fear love when it comes simply because it makes you vulnerable. But don't be surprised when it leaves, either. Just be glad you had the opportunity to experience it." -Neil Strauss

Book Club

When people learned I was giving comics a try I received many books to read.
People are surprisingly passionate about comics.
This manga was one of the suggested reads.
I did not fall in love with this one.
Too many characters to keep up with, and the story lines in all five books I read were too similar.
I also thought the manga had little emotion.
BUT!
This book is like no other book I have read.
It is to be read backwards.
The words are read right to left.
That part really challenged my brain.
That I liked.

"You act more like a cockroach than a proper vampire. Left to your own devices you would cover the world in your filth. I can't stand your kind. You don't have the self-respect to be a vampire, you undead maggot. You barely even know what you are." - Alucard's opinion on artificial vampires.

Book Club

If you want to read a book that will change your life; try this one.
The book will give you the extra push you need to do hard things to create success.
The author also happens to be one of my favorites.
Win. Win.

"There’s only one way to get through the fog of fear, and that’s to transform it into the clarity of exhilaration. One of the greatest pieces of wisdom I’ve ever heard comes from Fritz Perls, MD, the psychiatrist and founder of Gestalt therapy. He said, ‘Fear is excitement without the breath.’ Here’s what this intriguing statement means: the very same mechanisms that produce excitement also produce fear, and any fear can be transformed into excitement by breathing fully with it. On the other hand, excitement turns into fear quickly if you hold your breath. When scared, most of us have a tendency to try to get rid of the feeling. We think we can get rid of it by denying or ignoring it, and we use holding our breath as a physical tool of denial." - Gay Hendricks from The Big Leap

Reading Rainbow.

Chuck Klosterman is the king of pop culture writing.
There is no one better.
Plus, he is comical.
If you have not read this one, and you love music and pop culture, you should pick it up.
His writing is beautiful in a simple unexplainable way.
It is like talking to your best friend.
Quote from his book that prove his simple brilliance:
"We all have the potential to fall in love a thousand times in our lifetime. It's easy. The first girl I ever loved was someone I knew in sixth grade. Her name Missy; we talked about horses. The last girl I love will be someone I haven't met yet, probably. They all count. But there are certain people you love who do something else; they define how you classify what love is supposed to feel like. These are the most important people in your life, and you'll meet maybe four or five of these over the span of 80 years. But their is still one more tier to all of this; there is always one person you love who becomes that definition. It usually happens retrospectively, but it happens eventually. This is the person that unknowingly sets the template for what you will always love about other people, even if some of these lovable qualities are self-destructive and unreasonable. The person who defines your understanding of love is not inherently different than anyone else, and their often just the person you happen to meet the first time you really , really, want to love someone. But that person still wins. They win, and you lose. Because for the rest of your life, they will control how you feel about everyone else."

Oh. And. If you like T. Rex there is a great chapter on that genius.

Comics?

One spring afternoon my friend and I decided to take a walk around the city. A library trip was included in this walk. While at the library he marches over to me with this huge book and says,
"I am going to get you into comics. Read this."
Yeah...right. Me into comics? He claimed that this book is the first step for girls. I would guess that is true because it a graphic novel about love. I took his challenge.
I read it in two days. Easy read. Perfect for someone who is in school.
What I was not expecting was the roller coaster of emotions that large book put me through. The book was filled with a guy struggling with life, high school, religion, his first love, and growing up. Things we have all had to deal with. Things I deal with at my current age.
It was beautiful.
So was the artwork.
I officially love comics now. I am on comic reading assignment number two and I couldn't be happier.
Thank you friend for broadening my horizons. You always have something excellent to share.
P.S. Read this book right now. You will not regret it.
